We continue this fifth day, already exhausted by the fantastic walk at Sigiriya this morning. But we will not be disappointed either this afternoon.
Polonnaruwa is a place full with archaeological wonders. If you followed the previous posts, you already know Sri Lanka tries hard to put in the best possible light an impressive cultural heritage. Nothing to envy to countries like the Egypt or Jordan.

Carte/Map

A little bit of history available on wikipedia but again, we’ll find much more details on AmazingLanka.

Polonnaruwa is a very large site and it’s necessary to use a car to get from one point to another. Like he did in Anuradhapura, our van driver negotiates the services of a guide (a legit or at least one it seems so, because he was in the tourist information center). We will visit to 4 or 5 different places within a few hours under the hot sun.

This morning, we meet our driver. He will accompany us to Dambulla which will be our base camp for a few days. A road trip Colombo – Dambulla is around 150km and takes almost three hours.

Dambulla

Around Dambulla and Sigiriya

Driving in Sri Lanka is a very interesting experience and at times terrifying. A driver / guide is probably the smartest option.

The rule on the road is simple, it is the law of the biggest. In order:

bus and large truck,

then small truck,

minibus or large 4×4,

car,

motorbike,

bike

and finally the pedestrian.

The rule is simple, if a bigger than you appears, you drive/run/crawl on the roadside to let it go.

Our driver seems to master this jungle and brings us safely to Dambulla Rock Temple. At the bottom of this rock, a huge golden Buddha and it’s very flashy temple. A monkey indicates uphill direction and we walk the steep steps in a few minutes.

Dambulla Rock Buddha and Temple

This is a truly fascinating and extremely well restored site. We are talking about several millennia here. It’s probably one aspect most people ignore about Sri Lanka, its cultural heritage is comparable to Egypt. The example of this UNESCO ‘s World Heritage Site is perfect: they found vestiges dating BC (and 2700 year old bones).

Five main caves can be visited on this site. Inside, we find shrines/temples and statues of Buddhas. It’s actually quite dark inside and photos presented here were taken with a long exposure. Nevertheless, it’s superb and I loved the place.

On recommande chaudement.
