A short blog post for this second part of our sixth day: we arrived in Kandy. It’s a medium-size town (120.000 inhabitants) located in the center of the country.

Here again, we find many signs of a rich cultural background. Kandy was capital city for several centuries, so it’s not a surprise to find a royal palace. Nevertheless, I would say the lake and especially the temple of the tooth (of Buddha) are the most popular places in town.

Our driver takes us to the heights of the city and we enjoy this great view…

Ok, ok… The colours were actually far less amazing in reality. It was a very grey day and the view was more like this:

Sans le HDR… Ok…

During the few remaining hours of day light, we will walk about the Bogambara lake which is not too large.

We check in at the Queen’s Hotel. It’s a very nice place with interesting colonial architecture. Definitely worth the price.

FYI, be advised that many scammers are waiting for the tourists in front of the hotel, (I do not even remember the type of scam but it was pretty predictable).

We find a cool restaurant in front of Torington Park, the Kandy Muslim Hotel. On the first floor, the view is quite nice and the food is excellent (reasonably spicy).

Tomorrow, we’ll go see this Temple of the tooth

We lost a team member this morning, victim of a nasty indigestion, she prefers to stay in the hotel for the day. So we’ll be just the two of us to visit Anuradhapura today.

80 km of road and almost 1h30 later, we reach the ancient imperial city.

In the parking lot, our driver negotiates a local guide. The various sites are quite distant from each other, you need a bike or a tuktuk to visit. And for the price of the transport, we’ll also have the guide. For instance, a former archaeologist. Yes, I know… It sounds like a total bullshit. He explained that he had to give up the job after a cut of all state budgets related to heritage preservation, particularly in the archaeological department. True or not, the guy had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the area and he did a great job with us this day.

During those few hours in Anuradhapura, we’ve seen at least 9 sites (based on the pictures we took). For each place, I linked to the web site Amazinglanka.com, by far the best I found on the topic.
